Susan Lanigan currently serves as Chair of the Tennessee Education Lottery Commission, a position to which she was appointed by the Governor of the State of Tennessee and approved by the State Legislature in 2014. Before that, she was Executive Vice President of Dollar General Corporation (NYSE: DG), a Fortune 200 company and, at the time, the largest discount retailer in the United States by number of stores. Ms. Lanigan joined the company in 2002, as Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, and was promoted to Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and member of the senior executive management team in 2006.
At Dollar General, Ms. Lanigan worked with senior management and the board in strategic planning and growth initiatives during a time when the company grew from 5,000 to over 10,000 stores and from $11 billion to approximately $18 billion in revenues. She had a leadership role in several major transactions, including shepherding the company through a $7 billion leveraged buyout by Kohlberg Kravis and Roberts, and a subsequent highly successful initial public offering. She also led the government relations and media relations efforts of Dollar General, as well as its internal audit, global sourcing, risk management, insurance, corporate compliance, and community initiatives departments. Ms. Lanigan managed the resolution of a major SEC investigation and two significant shareholder derivative lawsuits against the company and its boards. She worked extensively with the board and CEO on identifying and recruiting five qualified independent directors, and partnered closely with the board through the transition of four CEOs. She established the enterprise risk management and global compliance programs, and oversaw the opening of buying offices in China and India. Ms. Lanigan was also deeply involved in investor relations and business analysis.
Ms. Lanigan also has considerable board experience in the non-profit sector. In addition to serving as Chair of the Tennessee Lottery Commission, she is chair of the board of Nashville Public Radio and serves on the University of Georgia Graduate School Advancement Board, the ACT National Workforce Solutions Advisory Board, the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation Board and the Cal Turner, Jr. Family Foundation Board.
Prior to joining Dollar General, Ms. Lanigan served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Zale Corporation. She joined Zale as it was emerging from bankruptcy, working with management and the board in the transition. During her tenure at Zale, she worked with the team on the closing and integration of two major acquisitions, including that of a large Canadian jeweler. She had direct involvement with strategic planning as well as identifying and cultivating new business opportunities, such as the launch and ultimate sale of a proprietary consumer credit bank.
Ms. Lanigan started her career as a litigation attorney for Troutman Sanders, LLP in Atlanta, GA. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Georgia School of Law, and cum laude from University of Georgia.
